This is one of the more interesting camera announcements IMHO. A 5 MP Panasonic with a Leica lens. Read here (http://www.dphoto.us/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=188&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0).

Am I the only one here who finds themselves lusting for a camera like this one?

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC1 is scheduled for March, 2004 delivery. It will have a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $1,599.00.
Who is going to buy this? 28-90 fixed 2.0-2.4 with five megapixels? Looking for a reason here..
There has been a lot of announcements that might of been exciting a few years ago..

I'm sure some people will buy it just for the little red dot, but unfortunately in consumer level digital cameras, the sensor matters just as much (if not more) than the lens. If this thing has a tiny sensor, it's probably got crappy noise levels just like every consumer P&S digicam. Why anybody would pay $1500 for something like something else they could get for $300 is beyond me.

You are correct in that a lot of focus will buy because Leica is affiliated, however don't underestimate the importance of the lens on digital. The lens is more important for a number of reasons. Back in the old D30 days, a lot of folks struggled with issues that were really due to the lens, The sensor can only resolve what the lens shows it. (By resolve, I'm not only talking about resolution in the strict sense, but also color, saturation, CA, etc.)
