Spent some time trying to capture flying birds yesterday since it was 60 deg. on the last day of the year and I could shoot without freezing my fingers. Not an easy task, especially with my 75-300, which specializes in slow response. Got this one but won't reveal how many shots got trashed. ;)

Nice shot Gary........ when I was visiting relatives in Michigan last summer, I shot some gulls with my 75-300..... and didnt get a shot as nice as yours.

That's a very nice shot considering the lens you used. IIRC, you are using a Rebel, aren't you? If so, that's what makes it so much harder to get birds in flight. Lack of AIServo in Creative Zone.
Gulls are also quite small so they are hard to keep in focus. I had a heck of a time with gulls in flight in Florida with 20D and 100-400L. But it was a lot of fun trying:
