Cool! When you feel like it, please share some pics and how you took them...
I'm waiting for my two flashes (Elinchrom FX400) to arrive, it will be fun to do some lighting experiments.

I'm setting up an indoor digital studio to shoot * amateur * models in, TFP CD. I just came back from Lowe's with 2 gallons of * neutral gray 18% * flat paint for the walls.
What are others using for the walls in your studio? I do believe, though don't quote me on this, that Scott in his lightingmagic book made a good argument about using neutral gray for the walls.
Other than that, looking at a couple of alienbee 800 kits to start out, ordered some poly translucent diffusion material from Dazian to make diffuser panels rather than buy soft boxes of defined sizes, etc. Will be using umbrella for fill light, and we'll see about additional lighting as I get rolling.

It makes perfect sense. ;)
Norman Phillips makes the same point in "high key portrait photography":
"If the background is close (3' or less) to the walls on either side of it, it is recommended that the walls be painted graw so as to prevent light from scattering onto the subject."
He also adds that if you want to have white walls (for aesthetic reasons) you can use black or gray panels instead.
_That_ said, I usually point out, whenever someone mentions "18%", that the light meter in most cameras are calibrated to 12.5% reflectiveness as default. (per ANSI standard) The Kodak grey cards are 18% grey for historical reasons and you have to open up half a step or so when measuring light using the cards. (the Kodak instructions should reflect this)
I apologise in advance for the untimely pet peeve. :)

Chris,
Check out www.backdropoutlet.com (http://www.backgroundoutlet.com) I use a lot of their stuff. It's pretty good quality and reasonably priced, too. If you can go to the trade show of your local PPA affiliate they are usually there and offer some pretty good 2 for 1 deals. They even offer raw muslin with instructions on how to paint your own designs.
