View Full Version : Member's Portfolio - New Category

Since there are such a large number of photos uploaded in the photo gallery, obviously not all of them are Pulitzer Prize Winners. I have created a "Portfolio" category. In this category, please post up to a maximum of 10 of your best shots that you would consider portfolio material. If you have less than 10, don't post just to get to 10. If you have more than 10, do a better edit. I think constructive critiques of portfolios can be quite benificial. Lastly, just upload your photos to the Portfolio Category, they will automatically be grouped by your username in that category. Here's the shortcut. Click here (http://www.dphoto.us/forumphotos/showmembers.php/cat/1405).

Question Steve.

If I go to my existing gallery, select a photo to "edit", then choose "move" to the Portolio Gallery, is it moving a COPY of the photo, or will the photo actually be removed from my existing gallery and place in the Portfolio gallery?

I also noticed that the upload has a feature now, which let's you fill in more info "up front" so it gets saved into each image you are uploading. Looks good.

I've tried to select a "top ten" list several times, it's just so difficult to pick them yourself and be objective...

OK, I seem to be having a problem. I did the following:
1. opened my existing gallery
2. Selected a photo
3. Selected "Edit" option
4. Copied the photo to the "Portfolio Gallery"
5. It appears in the "Portfolio Gallery", but when you click on the thumbnail, it says "this category does not contain any images"

So it must be I cannot copy them over there, I have to re-upload them? And how do I delete the "empty" gallery that is there?

Sorry to have created a mess; I was trying to make it easier on everyone actually by not having the photos appear again as a new upload.

QJ: its easier just to move it to the Members Portfolio using the move command rather than copying......You can move it back later should you want to replace it with another.

I tried that. Now it says I have 3 photos in there; only one shows....when I click on it, 2 show. But I don't have 3 in there. I think I messed it up big time.

Anders, I have the same problem, I think we may be brothers of a similar nature. Tell ya what, how about I pick your ten and you pick mine. :)

Good idea Nick but I think I'll have to pass. As Steve said a portfolio should contain what you yourself want to represent your best work so I'll just have to try choosing some pictures...  :)

Just discovered that the gallery apparently will not let the member portfolio be a 'copy' of some other image. It says:

We're sorry, but the system experienced an unrecoverable error. Please try again later.
However, changing the main category for the image does work. Probably better this way, so that the 'portfolio' is all unique selections.

The only problem I'm seeing is that it says I have 22 comments but I can only see 9 of them.

Right, but how do I remove the 2 "blanks" that are now in there?

Fair enough Anders, for what it's worth here are the shots I might have selected:

Thanks for taking the time Nick, I'll try to return the favour.

I agree on a lot of your choices, but not all. If I have some time I'll try to make a selection this weekend. I'm busy Saturday with an Enduro riding practice meet (not photographing, riding a dirt bike) and I don't know how beat up I will be after that. I suspect I won't get out of bed Sunday. :)

That first link was supposed to be "Blue Evening", not sure what happened. Enuduro huh? Too bad I didn't live closer, I've been wanting to photograph an motorcycle event, it would be an added plus to be able to post some pics of a fellow dphotoer. Have fun and be careful out there! :)

The 'copy' to Portfolio option still does not appear to work - and now I have QJ's problem of a picture that doesn't show - but appears in the picture number total. How do I get rid of it (or re-set the counter)?

Nick, it was a joy to look at your galleries, but of course very difficult to choose images.
Here's ten that I really like.

Thanks for sharing your ideas Anders. Actually I figured to just go for it last night and started my top ten, there are a couple of your choices in there that matched up. What kind of helped me was using the "view by rating" option here in the forum galleries just to see what others thought my best shots were. There are a few of your choices that I really like that no one else had ever made a comment on so I didn't pick them. I do have a couple slots left so that may help me out. Hope you had a fun at your enduro.

Lots of fun, but also a bit disheartening in that I realized how much technique I have to learn, and how out of shape I am. Yet another hobby where you quickly realize there is no shortcut - you actually have to train for strength and endurance and practice riding skills... :p

Your portfolio is about showcasing your work both technically and artisticly. Pick what you would want to show a prospective employer...say National Geographic (I like to shoot big):D . If you like a shot because it shows good technical and artistic aptitudes it should be considered. If you like a shot only because it has sentimental appeal to you...hang it on the wall.

I was always told that your portfolio should be updated every now and then. So if we take the dphoto example of 10 images...you really should have about 20-25 to choose from and rotate around.

I really don't have any shots in my gallery that have any sentimental value, I think the key word with my choices is variety. I'm trying to not to have more than one similar "type" of shot in the top ten. Like Anders said, it's not easy.

A portfolio is to me like a CV, it should show your strengths and probably has to be tailored to the prospective customer. Maybe you have to have one portfolio per type of subject if you are using it to get interest in your skills.

David, if you figure it out or get an answer, let me know! I stopped uploading to the Portfolio gallery until it's resolved.

QJ, what I'm doing instead of trying to copy to the portfolio is just selecting the pics I want and uploading from my computer. I know you'll have doubles that will show up in your gallery but it avoids some confusion.

Well I see 4 of my picks made it, I still think "Blue Evening" should be in there, it's a great landscpe photo.

The Blue Evening shot was in my initial bigger selection and one of the last to be excluded... it's so difficult to choose...

That's the idea but on a smaller scale you would want to have at least a few images of each type (commercial, fashion, landscape, sports, etc etc) to choose from and rotate around. Obviously if you're interviewing for a job at Vogue, you probably don't want to show all of your bird shots.

I'm willing to give it a go Nik, but I can only upload 7 pics since there is already 1 "visable" and 2 "invisable copies" there. David has the same problem with "invisible" copies taking up the count number. But thanks.... I'll work on it this weekend maybe.

Most of the portfolio pictures are not showing (with exception of the previously 'missing' ones - which now show). It appears that whole portfolios (eg Anders and Nick) have disappeared. I assume Steve is working on what happened...
