Last weekend I shot an indoor soccer tournament, mostly for fun and to test a new lens. Nothing much happened and most shots were also out-of-focus due to a malfunctioning camera (now being repaired). Anyway, the arranger had a photographer (or rather one of them brought his camera to take some pictures) but he ran out of battery power before the final was over. They had planned to take team photos of the winning and runner-up teams and he was a bit upset about not being able to take those. He came running up as I was packing to go home and asked me to help out and I grabbed a couple of quick shots. Most of them were to my horror also out of focus but I could rescue two of them that were good enough for their news web page. So, a couple of pictures are/will be "published" on the organising team's web page (http://svenskidrott.se/Organisation.asp?id=2982). Again, no money but fun all the same and I was happy to be able to help out. You never know, one day maybe these good deeds lead to a paying gig.

Here are some of the barely OK shots. You can see the focus error (check the lines on the floor behind the players).

Glad you were able to help out and, you're right, you never know when helping out can result in some paying workin the future. But it must have been extremely frustrating to have all of that high-end photographic equipment and have it prevent you from doing your best work because it wasn't performing properly, regardless of whether it was for pay. Nice job making the best of the situation.

Yes, it is frustrating for sure, and somewhat a waste of time. Still, because of this "test run" I detected the camera malfunction now rather than missing *the* shot later. :)

Were all of these matches in the same room? It look like some of the colour saturations are different from shot to shot. Were you shooting with auto white balance?, or cycling gym lights? Just trying to figure out why some shots seem to be more red than the others. Or perhaps that is just another symptom of a malfunctioning camera...

Brad, I was sloppy and used AWB, and I may also have adjusted them differently in post processing. Color handling is definitely a weak area for me. I need to do something about that to get consistent results, especially in these low-light situations.

I did order a set of WhiBal (http://www.whibal.com/products/whibal/index.html) cards a couple of days ago as I plan to get a handle on this.

I only noticed that because I can be sloppy that way as well. It's really kicking my but right now because I took a lot of panoramics on a trip recently, thinking that they would look really cool. I made sure to bracket all my shots on full manual mode, but I forgot to take it off AWB. Now most of my shots are worthless, or are going to take a lot of work...
