Shooting Drummers

Hello all, I have been shooting some bands on occasion. Things go pretty well but I need to figure out how to get better photos of drummers. They are hidden behind thier kit or looking down off in their own little world. Seldom can I get a great shot like the front men in the band.

Any tips or suggestions?

If you have access to the side of the stage or even behind you can usually get usable photos of drummers that way.

You can also get some great shots by anticipating what the guy is going to do (such as the photo of Vinnie Paul Abbott). The other photo, (Craig from Black Label Society) was simply looking for an opening and waiting for some light! Hope this helps

agreed, it's tough unless you have access otherwise the bls image from chris is typically the type of shot you are looking at and you just hope to get lucky with a shot like the one of vinnie ... typically i only opportunities like the bls one so i just look to see if i can get the drumsticks in view and a good facial expression - i only recall getting one or two drummer shots i really like

Saw the header & some strange things popped into my mind. How long does the drummer hunting season last in your state? Did a bunch of drummers get together & go on a rampage! And so on...

Since I have played in and out of different bands since the age of fifteen I can tell ya there are some drummers I'd like to shoot. :)

I can also tell you from experience that every talented drummer I have ever been in a band with had some personality quirk. Every down to earth "normal" drummer was always just an average player. Don't know if this theory is across the board, just my observations.

I've only played regularly with two excellent drummers. One is quirky and one isn't, but the quirky one was mega-quirky!! His face came to my mind when I read this thread's title.
