Strobe Questions

I have a 550ex speedlight. I would like to know if someone can help explain how to take a strobe action shot.....I would like to experiment with it.

I've never tried myself, but my approach would be roughly this:

• Use an external battery pack to help reduce cycle times
• Figure out how many strobe flashes I want
• Check table in manual for a rough estimate of how much output this gives me (1/64? 1/32? etc)
• Using a lightmeter, first set flash to manual and test what exposure the power output gives me (approach would be different if ambient lighting is too dominant)
• Set the strobe parameters
• Adjust camera settings and fire

Have only tried this once for the shot below. I found the critical thing was the number of flashes per second combined with the shutter speed - figure out who many frozen images you want to achieve during the time the shutter is open. I did a lot of trial-and-error settings, but could have gotten there a bit faster by doing some maths first.

Not knowing anything about strobe flash (my flash doesn't do that anyway), all I can say is that you've got a very creative - and well executed, IMHO - photo there, Anders.
