Talking Novice Needs Help

Hi !!!

I Am Totally A Novice With Digital Photography And I Am Thinking About Buying The 300d And Would Like A Little Info Before I Do !!!!

Please Can You Tell Me If 6 Million Pixels Is Enough To Enlarge To A4
Without Losing Any Pic Quality?

I Have Read That The Lens That Comes With The Kit Gives Poor Image Quality? Is It Worth Just Buying The Body And Using My Regular Lenses?

Please Help!!!!

Re: Novice Needs Help

Spend time over at DPReview.com's 300D Canon forum and you'll find PLENTY of information on this. But yes, you can print A4 size from the DReb and be pleased. As for the kit lens, many people mock it while others like it. IMO, it's a good lens for the money. If you have to pay over $100 for it, forget it; but stopped down it can be quite decent and give pleasing results.

Welcome to Dphoto. Thanks for joining. 6 mp will do fine for A4. Just as in film, the len(s) you select will be a critical factor as well to image quality. What film bodies and cameras are you currently using?

Re: Novice Needs Help

The 18-55 lens that comes with the 300D is quite a good one, considering it's price (about 60-80 quid depening on whose prices you compare). Obviously, it will not compete with lenses that cost several hundred pounds, and neither would anyone expect it to. But if you just use it correctly, you'll get many good shots with it. If you haven't got a lens that is around 18-20mm, then this lens will also help get you a wider angle... since the 300D has a smaller sensor than the film-size, you'll get an "extension" to the existing lens by about 1.6, so the 18mm will behave like 28mm or so. A 28mm lens is a decent wide-angle, as you'd probably know. Any other lens that covers about 18 mm would cost you a couple of hundred quid at least, but yes, it would probably be a tiny bit better... But certainly not three-four times better, which is what the price increase would be.

The 300D is an excellent camera for it's price. I've got the 10D, which has the same sensor and mostly the same features. I bought the 10D because it has a few more features that allow me to take motorcycle shots (hopefully, still haven't got round to the race-track...) and it takes a few more shots before the buffer is full, which is nice in some situations.

Certainly, if you fill the frame on the 300D, you'd be able to print A4 size shots without problems. You can probably crop a little bit too, but obviously not a lot...
