Red face 5D Mark II - Initial Thoughts

Well, as you know, I have the 5D Mark II and have been messing around with it a little. To the detriment of many other "Projects"

Size and Weight: It feels similar to the Old 5D but somehow seems a little more sturdy.

General Dynamics: The screen on the back is huge and clear. The menus are simple and easy to get around (If one has a 1D3 or 1Ds3 or 40D etc, they are the same style) and there are some more buttons that I like. AF-On is one. I love this feature. The ISO is handy. I have not figured out all the dial options yet as I mainly use Av with Tv for panning and Bulb now and then.

Auto ISO: I used this but I found it a little limiting and the shutter speeds were too low. I have to get used to how it runs and what it means. I expected the SS to be maintained. More to learn I guess. But a feature that worked, but I am not an expert yet.

ISO Performance: I found it to be OK. Anything special? NO, just what I expected. Similar to 1Ds3 but with more range.

HD Video: Very interesting. This is the main reason I have this camera. If HD Video is going to push my buttons, then the 5D Mark II will be the catalyst once we get some footage of animals birds and locations. David Attenborough beware!!

Kit lens: 24-105/4 is not something I'd normally buy. We have one already, so this one will be sold on.

AF: The jury is still out I guess, but I had no real issues. Many of my soft shots are lens or shutter speed related. When I had the combos right, it was spot on. I used AI Servo a lot.

All in all, I am happy with it.

One the boss arrives and reviews it for herself, then the real answer will be known!!! SWMBO (She who must be obeyed) will have the last say!!

Cheers

Rob

Yeah, right, "just happened" - I bet you have been tracking the Fed Ex guy for weeks... Congrats, I'm not the least bit jealous at all...

Honestly...I was in the area buying a pair of ice hockey skates for my friend's son who plays high school hockey and realized I was sooooo close to Allen's that I decided (had to wait anyway since the Hockey store wasn't open yet) to take a quite run to my favorite place away from home.

Plus, in the past week or so, I did some "short-selling" on a couple of stocks and made a bundle$$$......

Re: 5D Mark II - Initial Thoughts

Ok, for you new 5D owners, I was wondering how the new body handles noise at the new super high ISO available. Bob, your shot with Anna on Santa's lap looks pretty clean at ISO 1600, how about at 6400? The specs say expandable to ISO 25,600...expandable? How is it expandable, and have you? If so, how bad is the noise ratio on that?

Re: 5D Mark II - Initial Thoughts

I shot at 1600 at it handled like I was shooting my 1DsMIII at 800 (or less) Have not tried above 1600, but I am really please with the output at 1600.

Thumbs up Re: 5D Mark II - Initial Thoughts

I am thrilled with mine. Works "solidly" I guess for lack of a better word. Quiet enough ... I have not tried the video yet, been concentrating on other things. This was worth the money. With a red line lens - beautiful photos.

Now selling off the old 20ds and some short lens... but keeping the 5D. Will be down to 2 bodies, but I think these two will be grand!

Happy Easter everyone!
