Using Sepia and Black and White To Help Tough Lighting Conditions.

One of the oldest tricks in the book to help mixed lighting and tough lighting conditions is to turn the photo into black and white or sepia. Here are a few ISO 3200 shots that were taken in mixed lighting that I changed to sepia in DPP.

It might be an old trick, but it looks fantastic! I especially like the intensity and slight grunge look in the first photo - reminds me of old photos of the up-and-coming Beatles in Hamburg (and yes, I know this dates me horribly )
