Sports Photographers in early 20th century

Who were those who photographed sports in the teens and twenties? While not having seen many action shots in still photography from that period, I'm still curious.

For example my husband received a present from my son, a picture of the 1924 Washington Senators World champions. It's not your typical group photo. The team members are spread across the shot full bodied in one row and you can pretty much make out all their faces. A very wide shot. For some reason it impressed me.

I have to find out more about the photo from my son, but it did rouse my curiosity.

Re: Sports Photographers in early 20th century

It's very interesting to look back at old sports pictures. Because of the "limitation" of the equipment at that time, photographers were forced to be much more creative than the ones today. Scenic shots, different perspectives, etc. The advent of auto focus and long lenses has made the capturing of great action shots much easier, yet that is the majority of what you see. Not much time taken for great compostion, it's more "who can catch the best action."

A great subject for discussion, and something for us sports shooters to really think about.
