Safety of Web Posted images?

They're not!!

I know Steve has implemented no right click features on the photo galleries and the entire site.(I first saw this feature here, congrats steve) I appreciate this feature for it can make life more difficult for image thieves.

But how safe are these images? I was on Moose Petersons site today reading the D2H review. There is an image that I wanted to analyze on in PS to get an idea of metering and Moose's editing of the image, personally I thought the image was flat. Guess what, mo right click on his site. So ahh I was stopped from doing what I wanted or was I. Well these images are downloaded to your computer hence they are cached and I could retrieve the image from there.

I wanted you all to be aware of this, nothing is fool proof and if your images are on the web remember you are "sharing" them wether you like it or not.

Or just go into your browser preferences, disable javascript, and reload the page.

If you can see it on your screen, it can be ripped. All the fancy web tricks in the world, even putting a DHTML layer over the image or putting it in a flash piece, will be defeated by using a screen capture software.

I think the trick is that you don't offer great quality versions online.. No hi-res and jpeg artifacted proofs. If they want to steal those, well by all means.. You can only do so much with them.

Agree, there is nothing you can do apart from only putting smaller versions on, putting watermarks (expensive and another workflow step) or not posting at all.

For me, if someone steals an image off my site, I'd be quite chuffed (NZ speak for happy). If I was selling them, however, I'd work a different way in posting stuff on the web, for sure. Now I am just trying to get my work up to "steal me" quality....

the work continues....

It is very futile. There is no way to stop a person from stealing an image. Lind of like a car. At least we can try to make them work, or think about just a little bit. No right click keeps the average Joe away. I think sometimes we forget that we're not just the average Joe's.

I brought this up simply to enlighten those who are average that there is nothing "safe". Mainly because I was kind of jazzed and annoyed I "could not" take a closer look at Moose's review image as well as histograph information.

And then it hit, wait this image is on my computer. If you not I did not say who to get it like matt. Mainly I figured you should have to be a little creative in getting the image.

I also agree the real secrect is smallish images with some jpeg compression. Personally, I don't care if someone uses my image a background on their computer. But if I saw one of my images being used for commercial purposes, I think I'd be pretty irked.

Re: Safety of Web Posted images?

The only way to guarentee that images will not be stolen on the web, is to not post them on the web......

I am amazed on how many people that think that right click disabled is fool proof protection...... and it takes me all of 1 minute to snatch, crop out the water mark ( if it is near an edge), and repost if I want ( of course almost transparent watermarks across the whole image are very hard to work out)

BUt if I had the quality that would be worthy of stealing, then I would be more worried about it,,,,,,, or then again, maybe not
