My Nephew's Photos

I shot some photos of my nephew for my sister-in-law. My nephew will be turning 4 on 12/5 and she always has photos done at Wal-Mart every year around the kids birthdays. I told her I would be happy to give it a try and amde no promises.

Since I am new to the 10D and RAW format, I would appreciate any comments and/or suggestions. All photos were shot in P mode, RAW format with the 10D and 50 1.8 lens which is the only lens I have. I adjusted the white balance a little, did some sharpening in Photoshop and cropped some.

Overall I was pleased with the results. I have already spotted some mistakes in the settings used and some of the backgrounds. These were all shot in my front room with natural light so I was somewhat limited on my options.

I had a blast and he did too! Thanks for the comments!

Re: My Nephew's Photos

I'd say you far exceeded what she would have gotten from Wal- Mart. Nice job. Seems you're getting accustomed to your new camera. I think the white balance needs to be adjusted more on some. I think you should try some of those types of shot out of P mode to give yourself a little more control. Thanks for posting.

Re: My Nephew's Photos

Thanks for the comments. After I posted this here I was looking at the photos on pbase and noticed that the exif data stated that they were shot in shutter priority. I checked my camera and sure enough, it was still set on shutter priority. No wonder I was consistently getting the shutter speeds I wanted!

I do need to venture into manual mode more. Which photos did you think needed to have the white balance adjusted more? How do they need to be adjusted? This is all pretty new to me so you advice really helps.

Thanks again!

I think you did a great job on compsition. Better than Walmart would have ever cared to do. So congrats and glad your enjoying your new investment.

If there were 2 things I say could be improved one is lighting. But that takes alot of experience and equipment you probably don't have yet, (neither do I). But what can be changed are the colors. I think you went a bit too cold with white balanceand need to warm the image up a bit giving more life to your nephews face.

There are a few ways you can do this, 1. use you conversion program to adjust WB 2. Adjust each color in levels to achieve the color you want
3. adjust each color in levels to achieve color you desire.

4(EASIEST) Use the middle eye dropper,in levels or curves, to set grey point and set different points to the grey point until you achieve the color you want, that is a bit warmer. If you like I can send the one of your pictures with color set to where I prefer.

Re: My Nephew's Photos

I have adjusted the white balance and colors in a few of the photos. Thanks to sjhugoose for the suggestions. Check them out and see how they look.
