My viewfinder got smaller!

Hi guys,

I just got home, got a new accessory for my 30d, the Canon EP-EX15 Eyepiece Extender. When I fit it, it looks great, my nose doesnt have to be squeezed against the lcd. very comfortable to hold the camera in front of my face. but I was quite disappointed when i noticed my viewfinder got smaller-as in around 30-40% smaller!, I cant see much details on what I was shooting on....its like having a plasma tv before and now i got a 14" monitor :-(.

Did I get the right eyepice? or there are different ..well.. model? I realize eyes moved back due to the extention thus the reduction, but I was hoping the lens on it would compensate somehow to give you the same if not better view.

I dont want to shrink my view. we're photographers we should see better especially tru our viewfinder.

Thanks Again

Re: My viewfinder got smaller!

I'm afraid you got the right one... this is one of the few accessories I bought that I never use.

You could try removing the plastic lenses from inside the extender, some prefer the extender that way.

Re: My viewfinder got smaller!

That's the main reason I never bought one. I shoot with my left eye and would really appreciate an extension, but the loss of viewing field isn't worth it. Maybe you can return it?

Re: My viewfinder got smaller!

gparr,
I could try returning it, but unlike in the u.s. returning stuff here is not that easy...hmmm I can try though....i was surprise that canon would make such an accessory (my my wife was teasing me--its "access to sorry"
I really like the look and feel of it though on the camera, darn - but i cant really bear that small view.

Anders Östberg,
So, if I remove the plastic lens, would I still see the full frame or I'll loose some on the edges due to extender? I'm willing to do that (which will definitely loose the chance to return it) do you know somebody who did it?.... will it give me the same view as if there's no extention? if yes, Im ok removing the plastic lens.

Moral of the story:never buy any accessory without actually trying it first.

Thanks.

Re: My viewfinder got smaller!

I tried it myself for a while and you do lose some of the edges. I didn't like the extender this way either so now it lies in some drawer. If I had had the option I would have returned it.

Re: My viewfinder got smaller!

well after 9 mos. (yeah that long), I saw the (weird) canon product again under my drawer, and I did it, yes Anders Östberg, I removed the plastic lens as you suggested and well....it actually work, its not a bad idea...I like it better now. Its looks great on my camera and the view is just fine with me.

Thanks!
