just got windows vista utlitmate

I was using windows xp on my home pc and vista basic on my laptop. I just recently upgraded my operating system. Notice i did not say installed a full version of vista. My problem is that now internet explorere on occasion stops working and shows me a sign that it is checking for solutions to the problem then closses. AT that point I can then reopen vista. I should also point out that i have all the current updates to the system. Any help solving this would be appreciated. Could it be that I need to install a fresh bare copy of ultimate instead of just upgrading xp like i did? thanks in advance.

Mark, I've heard and read about many issues with upgrading to Vista ... heck, just running Vista causes a lot of headaches. My wife's 8 month old laptop came with Vista Basic installed (I was too lazy to reinstall XP), and I've spent more time tweaking and messing with that system than I've spent on my XP desktop machine in the 4+ years I've had it.
The recommendations I've read have all said to install Vista from scratch. Sorry, but I think you need to "bite the bullet", unless someone else has other ideas.

Look on the bright side ... you'll have Rant of the Week material for the rest of 2008.

If you are having problems with Internet Explorer I suggest installing Firefox. I have and haven't looked back. Also a big plus is it has spell check built in, you could say Firefox is bordering on spectacular.

I had a ton of problems with my "upgrade" from XP to Vista, since I did a clean install I have had alot fewer problems. Still more problems than with XP but I figure XP will be phased out and I might as well embrace Vista. I am in the market for a new computer either a Core 2 Dou or an Apple (just hate the price tag). Good luck with Vista.

now im noticing some computers are being sold now with windows xp instead of vista lol. oh well maybe i should have waited for it.

From what I've heard Vista will be the best thing that ever happened to Apple. Many people I have talked to are planning to make the switch from MSoft to Apple when XP is phased out.

man that sucks i have had that signature for what 2 years now and never noticed that i spelled bordering wrong i dont think i even remeber how to change it lol

When I switched to a Mac, I ceased being a computer technician and user and now am just a computer user. There's no way to describe it other than to say that everything simply works and works consistently. You'll not see me ever own another PC.

I don't know folks. I've been using Vista basic on my laptop for over a year now and it has been nothing but absolutely solid for me. I don't like the fact that Microsoft or rather I should say Dell forced me to get Vista by not even offering XP on the line of laptops I was shopping at the time.
p.s. really glad to hear you're going to switch to Firefox Mark-2 years???!!! lol!!

I've Home Premium that was OEM installed by HP. No major probs but do notice.
1. Firefox crashes often during when launched.
2. I've 4 gig of ram and if HP had installed the 64bit OS I'd install more.
3. Hate the changes they made to windows explorer.
4. Hate the fact I cannot get rid of the windows explorer sidebar for specific instances w/o impacting all future launch of the app.
5. Other than that ... LOL

Very strange, I never have any problems with Firefox on my box. Also, Tom, are you talking about Internet Explorer? Windows explorer is for exploring your computer (hard drives, CD ROMs, networks, removable drives, ect...)
