As sad as this picture is, I think it's pretty amazing that you actually FOUND a sperm whale calf, even a deceased one. They're pretty rare, I believe.

Yes, a super-rare find. I've been out on a dozen whale watching trips around Monterey, San Francisco and the Farallon Islands and seen gray whales, humpack whales, etc. but never a sperm whale. To find one on a beach right after it washed up and was untouched by the sharks was amazing. A sad find, but a once in a lifetime find.

That is sad. Poor little guy. Do marine biologists come out for this sort of thing?

The only funny thing about this find. I meet a ranger and tell him about the whale. He tells me he has heard and has come to check it out. I take him down the 5' wide, 1/4 mile long path cut in the side of a hill, that is the only path to the beach, and show him the whale. He tells me that the Marine Mammal Rescue Society wants to recover the body for an autopsy. He is now wondering why I am looking at him like he's crazy. I say, that's a twelve foot whale that probably weighs like 400lbs. How are you going to get it off of the beach? He was still trying to figure it out when I left. I recommended a helicopter...

The beach isn't very boat-accessible; big surf and rocks. I don't know if or how they removed the body...

How did this end up with 23,689 views?!?! The thread on most-viewed image made me go look, and I was astounded... I figured my most-viewed would be in the highest-rated list, but no. This one... (head shaking, inceredulous muttering) I searched fairly completely on google and didn't find any links except the post here on Dphoto... Weird.

The last time I saw a Sperm Whale was off Martinique. A mommy and it's calf were cruising along very slowly. I passed in my sail boat about 200 yards away. The adult turned to look at me as casually as a shopper passing by. It was an awe-inspiring moment I will never forget. Naturally, your shot, great as it is, made me sad.

Yeah, it was a sad find, but so rare and poignant that I had to shoot the scene. Thanks for your comment.
