Hi Chris, your truck images look decent but I'm surprised this shot made a cover when Toby's face is out of focus. The composition & lighting are good but I'd want the face to be the focal point. In instances like this I'd AF on the face then recompose the shot. No disrespect, just my 2 cents.

I agree 100%. Unfortunately at the time all I had was a Sony Cybershot F707 which didn't do great under low light situations, especially when the subject was moving. This was one of the better shots and, as you can see, was only used on the cover as a thumbnail. There was a larger version of it printed for the feature inside, however.
I do appreciate your feedback, so thank you. I now have a Canon 350D which would probably have the same problem with the lens I have now--looks like I'll have to invest in a really good fast lens in order to pull of shots like these in the future.

This image does work great for a thumb. I'm sure the Canon will get you the results you need. I could really use a faster lens as well, I have been getting decent results at concerts with what I have and shooting at a high ISO. Good luck and keep posting.

Chris,
I don't have one (yet), but I've read a lot of good things about the Canon 85mm 1.8 lens. It's not "L" series but it's supposed to be very sharp and ideal for low light situations. I do have the el cheapo Canon 50mm 1.8 and althought made of plastic it produces some great results especially at around $80.00.

Jeff, thanks for the advice... (I need it!) I'll check out that 85mm but if it's too pricey I may go for that 50mm.

I think you can find one for about $350.00 new.

CanonChris,
Everyone should own the 50mm 1.8. At $80 it's a steal for a tack sharp lens. Might have to look into that 85 myself.

Got the 50mm f/1.8 today and tested it out a bit... here's some of my test shots.

I'm impressed with the quality of the photos, but wish there was a zoom. I also am reserving final judgement until I'm able to take some indoor photos of a party, concert, stage show, etc.
