I saw a hawk in a tree staring at a pigeon, I got close and got all the action, even when it swooped down and got the bird in the talons.

Great shot QJ's right about the angle, it's great when you get these shots at the animal's perspective. What lens?

haha, you're going to laugh at this. I took it with my Cyber shot before I got my digital Rebel. I swear I took better pictures with that camera because it was an older model where the lcd flipped out to any angle. So basically the lens was all the way to the ground because it was on one side of the camera and all I did was hold it down and compose it up in the LCD. ok, now don't make fun of this one! http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/spec...ony_dscs30.asp

This reminds me of a talk i had with a really good photographer the other day, I was asking about equipment and he said "It's not the wand, it's the magician" so true

That's great You must have been really close with a max focal length of 117mm (that's why I was asking). Your friend is right, it's the photographer, not the camera, that makes a great photo.

oh, I was literally about a foot away. I'm assuming the reason it didn't fly away was because it was protecting it's catch.

I'll find a place to show the whole dramatic event from when he catches it on..it was really amazing. the other thing not in the picture is the other 20 or so people looking at the bird too...he looks kinda proud huh.

Great shot. Very heroic. I meant the bird, but in this case, you too. I wouldn't have been suprised to have that hawk decide to defend her kill with you that close!

I have a question. This photo, like many others on this website has been rated 10.0 by 3 users. The "My Chemical Romance" shot received one rating of 10.0 and is at the top of the "Top Rated" list. What gets one photo onto the list and not another?

Stephen, I believe the number of views is the deciding factor.

Wow great shot. I had a hawk fly past my windshield the other day and caught something in the grass by the curb. I was going to pull over to take a shot, but figured I was too close and would have scared it away. Guess after seeing this shot I'm going to be on the lookout for another. Great shot and you couldn't ask for a better back drop.
