I have tried to extract as much contrast and detail in the old man as possible - without getting objectionable image noise. Still not sure how well I have succeeded though... What do people reckon about this one? How well does it work?

I think it works David. I see a poor old guy with a dead chicken, and it appears the absence of wealth. The absence of color add's to this sense of hmmmm.... deprivation, but endurance, and the contrast of black and white mirrors the contrast of "worn suit" in front of "new suit". It's one I could sit and ponder for a while and probably come up with something entirely different.
