I had to smile when I read the description - and it solved the puzzling color tone. Everything is 'neutral', or maybe a bit on the coolish side.
With the sun low to do this kind of backlighting, I always get a much warmer tone. If you feel like it, you could just bump up the warmth in the greens, so as not to loose the outstanding color gradations and freshness of the iris petals.
You picked a perfect specimen of an iris. The petals are a delight to scan. Only that second little bud overlapping with the right petal is a bit distracting (I rather like the first one peeking into the photo)- but irises usually don't deal well with bending out of the way!
A great photo!

Thanks Stefanie. You're right. I should have adjusted the color temperature. The sun was low and bloom was in deep shade. The original color temp was 4600K. I warmed the whole image up to 6000K. It feels better now. Thanks,
Gary

Not being one to qualify on a critique on flower images I am always impressed by your shots Gary. Honestly I think they both look good but I like the original as the upper petals seem more translucent than the adjusted image. One can see the viens(?) in the petals better in image one.
Perhaps it is the temp change you made or possibly gamma value needs to come down just a bit. Darn nice flowers in any case.

The background feels perfect in shot 2, very warm, inviting, evening glow. The petals seem a bit too warm now and lose a bit of that great contrasty feel. What about roughly cutting out the iris of shot 1 (or masking with soft border) and layering it at 50% opacity on shot 2?
Poor Gary, we're such a hard crowd to please!
