Inspired by Stu Jenks, who very kindly let me play around with his techniques.

Mysterious fairy ring. Stiched from two vertical shots to create a square. Converted to B&W to replicate the use of Agfa APX, curves/layers to replicate bleach, sepia toning, then re-bleach and redevelopment. Dark border added to give vague 'Holga' effect, and layers/blur to replicate partial enlarger diffusion. No trouble from the sprites.

My favorite. It feels mysterious and whimsical at the same time, detail is good (image parsable) without being too light to lose the atmoshere.
In general I prefer the black-and-white ones of this technique to the color ones. In color they remind me too much of a dungeon-and-dragon type illustration, in b/w it is all about texture and wonder.

Thanks Stefanie for your comments. I haven't seen dungeon and dragon illustrations so i'm not sure how they relate to the colour versions, although i agree the B&W promotes mystery, whilst the colour seems to suggest 'photoshop'. I'm looking forward to experimenting with different light sources and settings. the lights in this example were made using christmas tree lights on a hoolahoop at night.

cheers,

ben

This one does work very well and I agree the B&W was the best choice. Actually Ben to be truthful I visited Stu's site and I think this was better than a lot of the photos there (from the few I had seen). As far as the "Arrival" photo I feel the color version worked better and is more consistent with the theme. B&W feels more dark ages where as the color brought it back to modern times. IMO more appropriate with an alien arrival.

Hi Nik,

thanks for the feedback mate! sorry i missed your earlier post asking for the details of how it was done. you might have picked up some tech info from Stu's site, but i adapted the techniques for digital (in particular the D70 whcih i think you also use?). to cut a long story short i needed a 60 minute exposure as the woods were so dark at night. if i took a 30 minute exposure i could push it a stop in postprocessing but i would still need the 30 min 'noise reduction' stage anyway. this wouldn't be so much of a problem but because i wanted a square format, and wanted to keep some resoultion up i needed to stitch at least two shots - so it was all getting a bit unworkable (not to mention battery power limitations). i also found that getting the lights to look good was much more differcult than i had originally thought. the solution after much trial and error was to arrive 30 minutes before sundown and take the two exposures in the gloaming, making sure i was quite precise with the position of the camera for each shot (typically 30 sec to 2 min duration). once dark i started taking 30 sec exposures (without nosie reduction), moving through the scene with the lights. once satisfied i had a variety of different versions i'd move the camera to position two and take the rest of the light sequences. finally at home i stitched the two background images. then overlaid my chosen light sequences and set the blend mode to 'lighten'. that is basically it in a nushell. it took me about three nights and several hours sat in a cold wood int he dark to get there but i think it was worth it.

Came across these guys with long exposure shots - not all good of course, but some nice food for thought.
