I pass an old grove of walnut trees at the trailhead...and they look like they're dressed up for a party, a result of English walnuts being grafted onto the California black walnut rootstock... which is more drought resistant I guess. The top appears to have woodpecker holes? The walnuts are no longer harvested.... it's a very small grove left. Someone else suggested that the difference in bark is a result of pesticide being painted up to a certain point and not beyond. I don't know which is true, but they look like dancers in the field.
