Apple's Ping hits 1 million users in 48 hours

Apple tonight hit a milestone quickly as it reached over one million users of Ping within the first 48 hours of its going online. The tally represents a third of the three million that have downloaded iTunes 10. Internet Services VP Eddy Cue expected that number to grow much higher, as "many more people" are likely to download iTunes....

Google teases Sept. 8 event with possible image search hooks

Google sparked curiosity on Friday by sending out an invitation to Electronista and other members of the press for a special event on September 8. The invite is brief and teases a showing off of Google's "latest technological innovation" and an "inside look at the evolution of Google search." Somewhat unusually, the event is being held at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and will have well-known search VP Marissa Mayer as well as key software engineers....

T-Mobile in talks for sub-$200 Huawei Android phone

Huawei's Ideos is already in line for T-Mobile USA based on reports of talks [sub. required]. The American carrier hopes to have the budget Android 2.2 phone by the end of the year and could have a deal finished within four to six weeks, according to the WSJ, leading to a launch shortly afterwards. Pricing would be a key point, as the phone would cost under $200 even off-contract and could be as little as $50 with two years of service....

Android web use closes gap with iOS in the US for August

Android has significantly closed the gap with Apple in web traffic in the US, Quantcast said on Friday. Use of Google's mobile OS has climbed 17 percent from the start of the year until August, giving it exactly a quarter of traffic. Apple's iOS, meanwhile, has lost 11 percent over the same eight months and has a narrower lead at 56 percent....

Samsung brings N350 netbook with hybrid 3G, 4G to IFA

Samsung as part of its IFA rollouts showed a new netbook with both 3G and 4G built-in. The N350 has both an HSPA+ modem for 3G networks and LTE for 4G in the same 10-inch frame. With the hybrid links, it can connect at a peak 100Mbps on cutting edge networks but still run at a quick 21Mbps on 3G....

Mobee intros wireless charger for Apple's Magic Mouse

Mobee today caused a minor stir at IFA by unveiling the Magic Charger. The peripheral uses the same induction behind devices like the PowerMat to recharge Apple's Magic Mouse without wires. By replacing the regular battery section and cover with a special rechargeable pack, the device can run for about six days without gaining any weight or bulk....

Viewsonic details dual-boot Android, Windows-based tablet

ViewSonic at IFA today filled in many of the details surrounding its dual-booting ViewPad tablet. Now dubbed the ViewPad 100, the 10-inch slate runs on a 1.66GHz Atom and uses either Windows 7 or the now old Android 1.6; either side appears to use a reference design but supports multi-touch. It uses just a 16GB solid-state drive, but an SDHC card slot provides most of the bulk storage....

Samsung 50-inch, 3D plasma dips below $1,000 at Best Buy

Samsung had the distinction of breaking the $1,000 price barrier for a 3D plasma TV as the PN50C490B3D has been dropped to $990 at Best Buy. The 50-inch TV only peaks at a 720p resolution and doesn't include 3D glasses. Regardless, it produces a full 600Hz refresh rate that can handle the enhanced display and is smoother for 2D content as well....

Nikon president hints again at mini pro camera

Nikon president Makoto Kimura in a new interview has dropped hints again at an in-between camera. He told Reuters the company wanted a camera "different from SLRs and compacts" and hoped to create a new category. It wouldn't be like typical mirrorless models, although Kimura wasn't clear on whether it would still be mirrored or occupy a pro point-and-shoot space like the Canon G11....

Antec expands into audio with virtual 3D speakers

Normally known for its computer cases and power supplies, Antec has announced a new 2.1-channel speaker system which it says will deliver realistic 3D soundscapes for movies and games. The Soundscience's anodized aluminum satellite speakers accept either digital or analog input. An external toggle switches the speakers between stereo and Antec's proprietary 3D sound mode....

UAE claims Israeli, US risks reasons for BlackBerry ban

Police from the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai claimed that the US had a political motivation in objecting to the Arab state's BlackBerry service ban. The agency's chief Dhahi Khalfan Tamim accused the US of hypocrisy as it wanted no monitoring in the UAE while it allegedly had full access at home. He also suspected that Israel had more access to this information and could use it against the country....

Samsung hopes to crack 10% smartphone share, sell 25m units

Samsung hopes to break through the 10 percent mark in smartphone share by the end of 2010, the company' mobile group head JK Shin said at the IFA show today [sub. required]. He was optimistic about Samsung's success in light of the Galaxy S and explained that Samsung now expects to ship 25 million smartphones this year, up from an earlier prediction of 18 million. It may ship as many as 50 million smartphones in 2011....
