Description:
|
This exciting new zoom lens provides ultra wide-angle coverage to the EOS 20D and Digital Rebel shooter. Equivalent to a 16-35mm zoom, it offers excellent performance and optics designed from the ground-up for digital SLR use. Three Aspherical lens elements, plus a Super-UD element, assure image quality. Its ring-type USM means fast and silent AF along with full-time manual focus. It focuses as close as 9.5 inches.

Pros:

ultra wide angle capability for APS-C cameras, "L-like" build quality and sharpness

Cons:

EF-S designation limits compatible cameras

I have owned this lens for about 6 months and have been extremely pleased with it. I have a Digital Rebel (300D), so the EF-S designation is perfect for me (for now). It took a little getting used to, as I had never shot with a ultra wide lens before, but I love the possibilities it offers. For instance, I can stand remarkably close to a large object (i.e. building, monument, landscape feature) and easily fit the entire object in the frame. There is, of course, considerable trapezoidal effect in these shots, but that can be corrected fairly easily in Photoshop.
Take a look at this thread for a discussion leading up to my purchase of this lens, including the pros and cons and a link to the MTF chart:

There are several photos in my gallery taken with this lens.

Although it's somewhat pricey for what some people might consider a niche lens, I highly recommend it if you want to add ultra wide capacity to your 20D, 350D or 300D camera. The only reason I gave it a 9 rating instead of a 10 is the limitation to a fairly small number of cameras.
